In the world of Japanese science fiction entertainment, there are some natural spectrum of creation – the infantile few (sentai), a few tricks (“kaiju” monster movie), several conceptual and elegant (Leiji Matsumoto Leijiverse). In addition, we found a variety of flavors in the fandom. If the details-and-heavy epics like Factoid universe Gundam and Five Star Stories spawn walking encyclopedias like Trekkies or Star Wars fans, the fans definitely cultish Tsutomu Nihei is withdrawn by the original film elements of Ridley Scott’s Alien.

Nihei using architectural background as a sweeping canvas on which he sprawls things Alien stand apart from its ancestors – fear of cramped, lonely remote, futuristic decay, the absence of camps and HR Giger’s sensual, inhuman design. The result is one of the most striking visual style and is known in the manga. Although the 10-volume debut Blame! no doubt will always be his signature series, Abara actually is his most consistent high quality, and the best place to start.

In contrast to the long narrative Blame’s, segmented and often confusing, Abara hold its own with a simple compact and powerful, but no less passionate conflict. In a city embracing the future of a large base, soaring structure called “grave,” an evil mutated known as “white gauna” (gauna derived from ancient Japanese term for hermit crabs) was held at the pleasure of destruction, moving faster than the human eye can see . Only Denji Kudo, a former member of shady organizations that have been given an experimental “black gauna” ability, can stop it. There are various other characters and details to engage the kind of thinking, but the main attraction of Abara is a conflict between “good” black and “evil” white.

This duality is played to the hilt with the design of the book as seen above – dirty and monochrome, traditional two-volume “up-down” standards of Japanese literature is mixed with black and white motif in the circle below the title. This logo is visible on the back of the book is also, in addition to the English word “Black / White.” In contrast to the yin-yang harmony Taiyo Matsumoto rotating black and white that I wrote last month, this is a semi-circle of pure, absolute rigid in their opposition, and never the twin shall meet. Abara’s conflict plays out much the same, the two sides locked in a struggle of power is amazing. Perhaps the absolute perspective Nihei is related to his love for American comics (see Marvel-published his Wolverine: Snikt), or maybe it was reading too much into it. But it will be interesting to note that the scene of his stunning action bears the highest similarity to parts of Western entertainment, but one that many borrowed from the East: The Matrix. Abara’s detailed, kinetic combat pay much lip service to the choreography, excessive Matrix icons, and styling cyberpunk Nihei, although it preceded the Matrix’s film, suitable for a T.

So the sequence of actions is candy for the eyes and of course the most immediate features of Abara-noticeable, but what really sets it apart from previous works Nihei is a very good balance of his strength. The silent introspection Blame It’s beautiful, long-range shot is widely used sparingly to reduce the frenetic action. The story is woven deftly and deliberately, in a more cinematic than serial. And although his protagonists are Kudo, such as Blame’s Killy, a tired and taciturn warrior fate forced his job with a great need – and characterization Nihei is, as usual, bloodlessly not sentimental – the character designs are more detailed and consistent than ever.
Of course, who was approached to Nihei does not mean it’s a total walk in the park. I found similar work in execution to the great American science fiction author Gene Wolfe (Book of the New Sun) in their shared love for the world is really an island run by their own logic and demands readers acclimate themselves, rather than accommodate and thus compromise. Both authors define their world with specific conceptual rules, setting strict limits on their character and their own narrative to avoid breaking the fourth wall and describes them in terms of fiction conceit familiar to you, Reader (about the year 2007 AD). It is a philosophy that enrich the material and greatly increase the number of rigorous thinking and imagination is needed,

but haphazardly implemented, will lead to frustration inscrutability – a charge that is often directed to Blame. However, obstacles Abara is easily the lowest output of Tsutomu Nihei, and with high quality and short length, it makes perfect introduction point for new readers.
